About
I’m an Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, Information and Health Decision (MEDCIDS) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, where I’ve been teaching since 2008.
My path here was not linear. I trained as a clinical physiologist, spent years doing respiratory function assessment in hospital and private settings, completed a Master’s in Medical Informatics and a PhD in Clinical Research and Health Services — both at FMUP — and gradually moved towards what genuinely interested me most: how technology changes clinical practice, and whether it does so well. That question drives both my research and my teaching.
Research
At RISE-Health, I work on AI-based clinical decision support, mobile health, and health data science. I’ve been involved in projects that produced tools actually used in practice — from eNO.VIS, one of the first web-based decision support tools for exhaled nitric oxide interpretation, to the FeNO Interpretation Aid, developed for clinical use internationally. I also built DiagCalc, a diagnostic test calculator used in teaching, and contributed to AIRDOC and InspirerMundi, mobile platforms for chronic respiratory disease management. I collaborate with Uppsala University on biomarker reference equations and type-2 inflammation research.
Teaching
I co-direct the Master’s in Medical Informatics at FMUP and coordinate courses in the Digital Health and Biomedical Innovation degree — a programme I believe fills a genuine gap in health education. My courses cover electronic health records, productivity tools, digital therapeutics, AI evaluation, and scientific writing. I care about practical outcomes: students who can actually do things with the knowledge, not just recognise terms.
Other things
I co-host “Saúde: Conversas & Caminhos,” the first podcast launched by FMUP — conversations about the present and future of health, aimed at a general audience. I’ve contributed to the ERS Breathe journal’s “Doing Science” series. I review for journals including the European Respiratory Journal, BMJ Open, and Clinical and Translational Allergy. I co-founded A2HI, a health innovation consultancy. I live in northern Portugal.
